Episode № 62 Embracing the Dark Side & a new paper planner

Welcome back everybody!
Lady Jupiter Podcast is the audio accompaniment to LadyJupiter.com a lifestyle blog where I write about my family’s military life, our home life, and other tiny details that I just like to share. I’m happy that you’re here with me.

In this episode I’ll share an update on our life as affected by the U.S. military (including something that I enjoy about our current duty station), then continue with a blog update, and wrap up with my most recent domestic diversion.

Today in our military-affected lives I have nothing significant to update.
An obvious perk about the United States Military is that we have military installations around the world, and it’s very normal for work trips to require a lot of travel. I bring this up because Mister Jupiter has been trying to get out to Japan for the last two years, and the trip keeps getting cancelled by our friend “Big Rona,” but not this time!

Recently he made it all the way to the airport before weather cancellations got him. The next and fastest route to Tokyo would have departed the next day, but his super tight itinerary didn’t have room for an entire day delay; so it was cancelled again. At first I thought that he would just take the week off from work (since he wasn’t supposed to be here), but his squadron actually did need him, so it was good that he wasn’t in Japan. But he still needs to make that trip, so he’ll try again when the next window of opportunity opens. Luckily we already located everything he needs for the trip, including some Japanese Yen that we had leftover from our last trip to Tokyo. We just need to make sure that it doesn’t get misplaced before he can spend it in a conbini.

Today I want to tell you about our favorite coffee shop outside of Little Rock AFB. It’s called Dark Side coffee, and we used to have easy access to their brewed coffee last time we were stationed here, when we lived south of the river. We used to drink Dark Side at River City Coffee, a great little cafe in Hillcrest. But now that we’re living north of the Arkansas River, we have easy access to Dark Side’s “express” location (a drive-up only building in a parking lot. I think it definitely counts as a “brew thru” even though it’s clearly not a beer barn). And now we’re able to experience their new second location; a lounge in North Little Rock. The lounge has tight parking, but it’s a nice space, and now they have room to display their merch.

Convenient locations aside, we love Dark Side Coffee because the flavor is delicious, and they have a fun menu that isn’t afraid of half and half. Mister Jupiter orders their bulletproof-style coffee, that’s a cup of fresh coffee blended with coconut oil and butter. And for myself I just like plain unflavored breve lattes. I enjoy the sweetness of half and half on it’s own, but I will occasionally ask for a breve mocha if I want a hot milkshake. On the occasion that we’re both home on one of Kid Jupiter’s play date days, we try to leave the house early to visit Dark Side, so that we can have a nice little morning coffee date while we wait on the Kid.

For today’s LadyJupiter.com update…I’ve only updated Outfits of the Day Q1, and already had a duplicate outfit - oops! I’m usually more mindful, but I guess that I really like that one outfit.

And now for my most recent domestic diversion I’ve been letting the laundry slide a bit because I am aggressively trying to organize my brain on paper again. Over the last few years I’ve slowly been relying on my phone more and more as an external brain, and I’ve also noticed that not having my phone handy makes me feel as uneasy as not wearing my glasses.

I don’t like that level of dependence, so I’m working to change that. Luckily, as an older Millennial, I didn’t grow up with a computer in my pocket, and I have a lot of experience with analog organizers. So almost every night this past week I’ve tried something different in this endeavor to make my brain less lazy and reliant on technology. I bought a little A5 size binder, a graph paper and divider refill pack, then I accidentally bought some A6 pouches that are surprisingly useful, I took apart my smallest Rocketbooks, and dusted off my punch board so I can make my own A5 pages.

Each night I take it apart and rearrange, then try it for a day…then I take it apart again. I’m not sure what my perfect custom planner looks like, but I’m at least getting familiar with some options and configurations that I don’t like. My next step is to buy some fold out pages from Etsy. I found some good ones a few nights ago, and wanted a few days away from Etsy before I look again and probably buy.

And a follow up from last episode - One day after I uploaded the last episode, my local exchange announced that a new to me vegan food truck was going to be at the BX!

As soon as I saw it I packed up kid Jupiter to head that way, then I got distracted and spent all of my public energy in the commissary buying olive oil and potatoes. I hope the vegan truck comes back so I can try again. I’m not vegan, but I like supporting all of the trucks.
