Episode № 60: Ideas & Breaking a Fast

Welcome back everybody!
Lady Jupiter Podcast is the audio accompaniment to LadyJupiter.com a lifestyle blog where I write about my family’s military life, our home life, and other tiny details that I just like to share. I’m happy that you’re here with me.

In this episode I’ll share an update on our life as affected by the U.S. military, continue with a blog update, and wrap up with my most recent domestic diversion.

Today in our military-affected lives I have nothing significant to update.
Mister Jupiter is busy with his new batch of students, I am trying to decide what I want to bring to the next in-person social that isn’t on the calendar because Omicron is in our lives now. With any luck I will decide what to bring before any dates are settled.

Anyway -while I have you here I wanted to run an idea by you. I was thinking about gently adding a new segment to this podcast where I share something that I love about where we live…so since Uncle Sam tells us where we’re moving next, and we choose to find happiness in each location, I think it’s worth sharing the happiness that we do find.

So in the context of regular episodes I’ll talk about recent experiences on or near our current installation. And in theory this idea would give me some content to release as special episodes where I can gush about my love of Leavenworth, Kansas, and share my dated perspective of Travis Air Force Base, and more. There’s a lot of installations that I have visited, but never experienced as a local, like JB Sam Houston - but I don’t really have anything to offer newcomers or travelers, so that’s an example of a place that I have been to but will not detail…well, not until I actually have something to share - so that’s mutable. Anyway - I think this idea is a fun way to share the little things that we’ve discovered.

If I start this segment now, it’s going to be all about Central Arkansas findings because we are stationed at Little Rock AFB. I know that not everyone is thrilled to hear that they’re PCSing to the middle of Arkansas, and I kind of get it, but Little Rock is a lot of fun. When Mister Jupiter PCS’d the second time to Little Rock AFB we were dating and I was living in Midland, Texas at the height of the last oil boom. He and I called it Kandahar USA, because I was surrounded by industrial vehicles, dirt & sand, city infrastructure that could barely support the population. There were tent cities behind movie theaters, coyotes and tarantulas in parking lots, and if I had lunch downtown I was often parking between Maseratis.

It was a weird place, so the invitation to move to a normal city was accepted with gusto. Little Rock, Arkansas is actually full of delightful things and wonderful people - that’s where this new segment can benefit others seeking good things around military installations. The scope will be narrow; because I haven’t lived everywhere, but I’ve had a few different addresses, and that’s not nothing.

So let me know what you think about this idea. You can air your grievances publicly on Facebook at facebook.com/ladyjupiterdotcom or you can privately email your concerns to podcast@ladyjupiter.com. For today’s LadyJupiter.com update…
I got the ball rolling on this quarter’s outfits of the day post. So last quarter is when I changed the range from astronomical seasons to calendar quarters. This quarter is where I am removing the detailed information for each photo. I am still annotating, but nothing clickable. I like providing details overall, but I realized last month that it kind of stressed me out, and that me spending time and money to stress myself out is foolish, and I will take no part in it.

Well unless I start getting comments about people missing them, in which case I will be happy to bring them back. But for now, I am just cutting out a low level stressor and happy about that decision.
📌 Outfits of the Day :: Q1 2022

And now for my most recent domestic diversion, the dryer only has one small load of unfolded laundry. It’s just a batch of Kid Jupiters clothes, he has enough clothes to not notice that some are not in his room.

I could have addressed that small concern last night, but instead I chose to watch Hackers on Amazon Prime Video and enjoy some steamed broccoli with hot sauce. Hackers is a great example of a movie that I just plain enjoy, especially the soundtrack. It’s one of those movies I can watch anytime, and I would much rather watch something that I’ve seen hundreds of times rather than watch something new. I actually like new things, especially new things like moving to new cities and finding the best brunch in town, but when I want to turn off my brain and watch something on TV, I really do want to turn off my brain. Watching something new means that I have to pay attention and that’s not always what I want.

So pairing the mid 90s Jonny Lee Miller and Angelina Jolie with steamed broccoli and hot sauce was a delight. That dish was how I broke a 40 hour fast, and it was perfect. At first I was convinced that I would still be hungry but after I actually finished eating I was stuffed.

I know that some of my habits may sound like torture, but I assure you that they are not. I really enjoy fasting, because my digestive system loves taking a day off, and after eating so much over the holidays it is nice to relax and focus on other things for a day or two. And my choice to have steamed broccoli and hot sauce, well that happens to just be one of my favorite things to eat. I could have gone for a steak and green beans, but I didn’t feel like cooking, so I didn’t. And for the record yes I do stay very well hydrated during my fast; I drink water, unflavored black coffee, and plain organic green tea. No lemon juice because lemons are food and putting food essence in water is not fasting, it is low calorie eating. And no zero calorie beverages, because fasting isn’t about keeping the calories low, it’s about keeping insulin low, and those zero calorie products definitely spike insulin, which lowers blood glucose, and that is what makes people hungry or shaky. So it’s easy to fast for days as long as you keep your insulin as low as possible, which really is easy to do, but it does take some practice. Working up to longer fasts is both a concerted effort to stop focusing on food all the time, but really to teach your body how to burn fat for fuel instead of preferring glucose. If you are interested in learning more about how to fast, and how it works, grab a copy of Fast. Feast. Repeat by Gin Stephens. I will link to it in the show notes, but it’s easily available on Amazon and Audible. It is comprehensive, conversational, and covers everything really. I cannot recommend it enough.

And that’s it for today’s episode recorded in a closet.
