Few military-life updates, I talk a little bit about the custom Daily Jupiter pages I have been sharing lately on LadyJupiter.com, then I wrap up with a recipe for cabbage & sausage - a surprisingly toddler-friendly dish that was a hit. Mmm, I can't wait to make it again!

E44: Daily Jupiter Pages & a Cabbage and Sausage Recipe

Welcome back everybody!
Lady Jupiter Podcast is the audio accompaniment to LadyJupiter.com a lifestyle blog where I write about my family’s military life, our home life, casual fashion, and travel when possible. I’m happy that you’re here with me.
In this episode I’ll share an update on our life as affected by the U.S. military, continue with a blog update, then wrap up with my most recent domestic diversion.

Today in our military-affected lives I have nothing significant to update.
Our calendar is slowly gaining travel dates - so that’s a nice sign of normalcy. Most travel dates are just Mister Jupiter flying around the country. But one might include me, and it might be available for me to virtually attend…but we won’t know that for a few more weeks. So (as usual) we will wait until someone decides, and shares that information.

For today’s LadyJupiter.com update…
I actually made the document that I mentioned last week, and have started using it randomly. It’s a custom-made daily schedule. It contains the hours of the day (so you can see our everyday lives closer if you choose), also a menu (so you can see that we get into cooking ruts also), then two flexible sections - one labelled “overall” so I can share any big-picture themes or situations about that day, and the last box is blank…and I like scanning random objects there because it’s fun.
This page is great because I can write and share little things with you, AND it’s faster than the typical blog post. You get to see that we’re still alive, meanwhile I can relax about not having time to work on the 100+ articles that I want to write.
Otherwise, these “Daily Jupiter” pages are partially uncategorized; they don’t have their own category on LadyJupiter.com but they are easy to find and all share the same “Daily Jupiter” tag. Here’s a link to the tag so you can isolate them from the rest of the site and just nose around our daily lives. Since these uploads are just for fun don’t expect to see them in any particular regularity. In general we can expect to see more when I have less writing time, and fewer when I can write full articles again. Or not. Nobody knows, least of all me.

And now for my most recent domestic diversion
I need to talk about food again. Specifically to share a recipe that Kid Jupiter really loved - and if I talk about it I will write the recipe, then we can both have easy access to it in my show notes blog (link in the show notes)!
Last week’s surprise hit dinner was cabbage & sausage. A humble dish that I don’t make often, and THAT has been a mistake. You just need one onion, one pound of sausage, one small green cabbage, a can of crushed tomatoes, and a few extra spices to taste.
I build this all in a large enameled dutch oven, but any medium to large pot will work. Dice the onion, and sauté in olive oil until soft. Then add the sausage, crumble it with the onion. When the sausage is cooked, add the diced cabbage. I prefer a small dice that cooks faster. As the cabbage cooks add any extra spices you like. Since our sausage was already well-seasoned we didn’t need much. I only added a half teaspoon each of smoked paprika, fennel seeds, and rubbed sage. Make sure that any seeds get direct contact with the cooking pot - because toasting whole spices brings out more flavor than simply warming them with the rest of the dish. Once the spices have warmed up, add the can of crushed tomatoes. Stir well, then cover and simmer for a few minutes while the cabbage softens.
You can just as easily use more crushed tomatoes for a soup, or add noodles if you want a heavier meal.
I served this cabbage & sausage dish with some plain butternut squash for a full meal. I pressure cooked the whole uncut butternut squash on high pressure for 25 minutes with a cup of water under the trivet. After carefully transferring the squash to a cutting board, slice lengthwise and scoop out the cooked squash. No need to cut, peel, or scoop the seeds before cooking!
I can cut down a butternut squash quickly, but prepping one to cook in its skin is so easy that I can keep my eyes on the toddler while getting the squash ready. The best part is that I set the squash to cook, and can walk away knowing that it will be ready when I’m in the kitchen again.
Mister Jupiter isn’t always home early enough to help me cook dinner, so anything I can pressure cook and keep warm is a huge win for me right now. Especially in the winter!
