This tardy upload is sponsored by my unfocused brain! I revisit last week's idea of quickly sharing five small interesting things - those things this week are organizing with filing tabs, waterproof paper, heart rate variability, audiobook recommendations, and the gift of "room service" to a family with a newborn.

E40: HRV & Book Recommendations

Welcome back everybody!
Lady Jupiter Podcast is the audio accompaniment to LadyJupiter.com a lifestyle blog where I write about my family’s military life, our home life, casual fashion, and travel when possible. I’m happy that you’re here with me.
In this episode I’ll share an update on our life as affected by the U.S. military, continue with a blog update, then wrap up with my most recent domestic diversion.

Today in our military-affected lives I have nothing significant to update.
Mister Jupiter is back home from a work trip, and we both have a lot of work to do these next few months. That’s all for now because this is just the scheduled calm before a familiar storm. We can expect our military-lives to be pretty mild for a few weeks before things get exciting again.

For today’s LadyJupiter.com update…
I have made zero changes since last week. I didn’t have the time to write that I thought I would, then the Capitol suffered a violent insurrection. This week will be better on all counts I hope.

And now for my most recent domestic diversion
I’ve just had an unfocused week overall. So instead of one big obsession occupying my mind, I’ve been inundated by tiny thoughts and rogue research. Like last week, I’ll share five things that I paid attention to for 20 minutes or more.

1) I organized my daily Rocketbook with tabs. The notebook’s pages are just a little too slick for easy page turning, so I bought a set of Post-it filing tabs (handy affiliate link in the show notes) to help me out. I color coded three sections. The first tab locates my monthly two-page spread, that’s the first section. The second section uses a different color, and the next three pages each have tabs - I usually keep my blog notes and tasks there. The third section is the entire second half of the Rocketbook that isn’t regularly used for anything other than note paper, so the third color tabs are on every other page so I can quickly flip to the back without missing any pages.

Miscellaneous thing #2 I bought some TerraSlate waterproof paper to print my own re-usable household notes. Having re-usable paper at all really got some creative gears turning. Those gears remain unfocused, but the potential is there - it’s like walking into a haunted house and knowing that you WILL be surprised, but you don’t know how or when. So until I can focus my inspiration, I made one quick year-at-a-glance page for Mister Jupiter and I to write future dates. That one print out has shown me already how perfect our laser printer is and I am happy that we got rid of our ink-hungry ink jet printer.

3) I started researching the importance of having a high heart rate variability -HRV-, and looking at wearable technology to gather that information. Here’s a link to the Harvard Health Blog, specifically to an article about using HRV to monitor wellness. Later this year I’m going to blog about a smart ring that gathers HRV data, it’s called Oura (spelled o-u-r-a) and it can detect illness (even COVID-19) about a week before symptoms start, because the Oura ring also measures your body temperature as you sleep, and their study participants who developed COVID-19 recorded higher night time body temperatures about a week before day time elevated temps were detected. I think that’s amazing all together, and if buying one of these trackers helps fund their research I am all about it. Overall this ring is a sleep tracker at its heart, it just happens to track accurate heart rate variability, temperature, sleep cycles, and can integrate activity tracking data from other smart devices.

4) I either gave or recommended two audio books to family members who are interested in slimming down. To one I recommended The Obesity Code by Dr. Jason Fung, and to the other I recommended Gin Steven’s new book Fast, Feast, Repeat. I am a firm believer in fasting for health - primarily to stoke autophagy, then to enjoy the resulting weight loss that happens when you start to burn body fat instead of relying on dietary sugars for energy. I re-listen to one of these books almost every month, and I absorb a little something different each time - it’s amazing. This week’s re-reading epiphany was that I my fasting and non-fasting days need more contrast. So that’s eating more or differently on my “up days” and even fasting differently on my fasting days - I might cut out my black coffee and do a classic water fast on those down days.

Miscellaneous thing #5 is that a nearby friend is going to have a baby soon, and I can’t decide what dinner I want to take them. I kind of want to make them a meal kit that just requires them to just add water and time, but I don’t want to provide something like that on a low energy day - and those are absolutely unpredictable. Mister Jupiter thinks I should make them a batch of chili mac. And I’m just getting tangled in details - specifically good vegetables and desert on the side. I’ll figure something out. In the meanwhile I already signed up to get them a Whole Foods delivery because I know they live within delivery range. I’m calling it “Room Service Brunch” and that order will be just fun weekend nibbles like coffee, fresh pastries, fruits and cheese, and some frozen appetizers. Actually…I’m going to order “Room Service” for our house each month, because we are worth it, and it’s a good idea that needs to be used, lest I forget. Besides, it’ll make this assignment in Central Arkansas sweeter because we don’t know where we’re moving next, and I can’t count on having a Whole Foods nearby enough to deliver.

And that’s it for today’s show!
