Episode 23: Writers Block & Spa Time

Welcome back everybody! Lady Jupiter Podcast is the audio accompaniment to LadyJupiter.com a lifestyle blog where I write about my family’s military life, home stuff, my low maintenance beauty and fashion, and travel when possible. I’m happy that you’re here with me. Today I’ll share an update on our life as affected by the U.S. military, follow on with a blog update, then wrap up with my most recent domestic diversion.

Today in our military affected lives I have nothing significant to update.
Mister Jupiter just had a full four-day weekend, he hasn’t had one of those in months! Entire days off are kind of rare, but four in a row?! Wow. We had an excellent staycation; went to Barnes & Noble for breve lattes and books, and let someone else cook lunch. Light housework happened, he smoked things in the Big Green Egg, and I got caught up on sleep.

For today’s LadyJupiter.com blog talk…
Since we last spoke I have put up one post - Picks of the Week № 35. That week I focused on pantry favorites, and shared my love of chocolate chips, green Cholula, powdered smoothies, Stumptown coffee, and instant ramen. For the record the number refers to the week of the year, not the number of weekly picks. So far I have only written twelve Picks of the Week posts, and most of them fall on odd weeks for no reason. I look forward to seeing how my picks change from year to year (when I can actually compare same number weeks in differing years).

Otherwise I have started another four or five drafts. After lamenting recently that I was having a hard time finding topics I did something that almost always helps me. I listened to a podcast to get out of my brain for a bit, after the show I sat down with a cup of coffee, pen and paper, and pretended that I was at Denny’s - Lubbock Texas, 50th & Slide, 2002. I brainstormed on two topics, and remembered that there are things that ONLY I CAN WRITE. For example “house rules” - loads of people have them, but nobody can write mine. So remembering the roots of LadyJupiter.com helped, meaning that nobody else has my perspective and experiences, so I should simply use my voice to write what I know; and that the content doesn’t have to be earth-shatteringly brilliant. Luckily I had a good gush of ideas before my writing motivation went out to sea. At this rate I will be very surprised if I get any new blog posts up this month. Most days that I sit at my computer I just daydream about going to bed…so I just go to bed and listen to an audiobook instead of writing. At least I’ll be well rested when I get motivated to write more!
If you’re curious I’m re-listening to Deep Nutrition by Dr. Cate Shannahan (link in the episode description) it’s a favorite, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to clean up their diet and walk away from processed foods. When I first bought this audio book I was already avoiding added sugars and vegetable oils, and her book helped me stay that way. I’m definitely not perfect (especially considering my chocolate chip consumption) but I rarely eat out because vegetable oil is everywhere, and I make a lot of things from scratch like applesauce to reduce our refined sugars, and pasta for minimally processed fun in the kitchen.

And now for my most recent domestic diversion
I’ve been either cooking or caring for myself these afternoons instead of folding the laundry. Transitioning Kid Jupiter to one nap instead of two has eliminated my daily spa hour, so now I get my D.I.Y. spa time every second or third day - so it’s less frequent, but it’s longer. Oh - maybe I should write about that when I can stand to write again. Regardless I’ve been enjoying having more time to have a long shower, laser off some arm hair while my alpha hydroxy acid toner soaks in - all while listening to one of many health and wellness podcasts. Then it’s suddenly time to get dressed and start dinner before the Kid is up. At least I get the time to myself.

I’ve been struggling to get alone time - like many other stay at home parents during a pandemic. This spa time is excellent to be be alone (no dogs in the bathroom!) and focus on my pores and follicles. When I feel the need to get dressed and be in the sun, I take the toddler with me to get curbside groceries. Of course I’m not actually alone, but he can entertain himself well enough in the backseat that I can just listen to my local NPR station and drive. It’s nice.

And that’s it for today’s show!
