Episode Seventeen: Mohawks & Going Gray

Welcome back everybody! Lady Jupiter Podcast is the audio accompaniment to LadyJupiter.com a lifestyle blog where I write about my family’s military life, also travel, home stuff, and my low maintenance beauty and fashion. I’m happy that you’re here with me.
Today I’ll share an update on our life as affected by the military, follow on with a blog update, then wrap up with my most recent domestic diversion.

Today in our military affected lives I have nothing significant to update.
Promotion boards are coming out soon, so we’re looking forward to see where Mister Jupiter is. We have an idea of course, but we won’t truly know until these things are public. So while we wait, I wish happiness and calm to others who await promotion news this month.

For today’s LadyJupiter.com blog talk…
It’s time to talk about a popular blog post because it’s the beginning of the month! The most popular blog post on LadyJupiter.com that I haven’t talked about yet is titled Growing out a Mohawk. You know how they say to “write what you know”?! well, I’m good at growing out hairstyles, and I have an edge not as a female lady person with multiple mohawks, but as a humble lady person who doesn’t mind taking and sharing photos of the painfully awkward growing-out phase. So that’s exactly what I did. Link in the show notes. I stopped shaving my sides after Baby Jupiter was born. My post about growing out a mohawk specifically shows the path I chose because I didn’t cut down the actual mohawk and instead opted to grow out two lengths of hair…one significantly longer than the other. For those that don’t know or haven’t seen - I don’t skimp on the mohawk, and I won’t keep one any shorter than nine inches - but that’s just personal preference.
This post - Growing out a Mohawk - not only has been a top five most popular post lately, but many many people have found me via google searches about growing out a mohawk, or photos of growing out a mohawk. Truth is that is exactly why I made that post. Growing out a mohawk sucks and looks dumb, but no one (that I could easily find) was willing to actually show what it looks like. So I did. And I did it without regrets…mostly. Many nights I just wanted to shave it all off, but I’ve done that too and things are just as awkward around two or three inches of new growth. Men have more socially acceptable short-hair options, but I tend to boldly keep going until my hair is at least 20” long…so it stays weird for a while. That post ended around no-haircut-day 200, when my sides were long enough for a tiny trim to roughly match my long sides. So hair cut day became day zero and I ended that post since I no longer had a mohawk to document.
Be advised that I haven’t had a regular hairdresser in a while, so I just popped over to the nearest beauty school and asked for a cut. The receptionist marked me as a short hair cut, and when my hairdresser unclipped my mohawk she gasped as nearly two feet of of hair relaxed. After the initial shock I was shampooed and conditioned like normal, but anyone who was available came to witness the cutting of such a long atypical haircut.
I asked for my normal; something low maintenance…wash and wear because I wouldn’t have time for normal shaping or dusting. I was given a nameless symmetrical cut and have been growing it out ever since. I might take up another mohawk when Kid Jupiter is big enough to wield the clippers, but maybe not.
If my white hair streak keeps growing at its current rate I may want to keep my hair and let the gray patch be dramatic on its own. Right now my grays are generally random, but they are clearly more concentrated at my right temple. It’s a textural change there too - something about the melanin dropping has affected the texture, and my hairline whites get extra rowdy without a moisturizing shampoo. But don’t worry, I’ve found a great shampoo for now and I’ll write about it later - stay tuned if you’re interested in French products.

And now for my most recent domestic diversion
I’ve just been cooking since we talked last. The other day I was making a nice vegetable broth with a lot of leftover veggies, and that wasn’t too long ago. Since then I have received another fresh box of organic produce, and have been having fun challenging myself to use the most sad items first. This week’s haul arrived extra sad (the dry ice was melted, and the box was partially open), so that first night we had jicama salad with lime and chili powder, then sauteed beets and broccoli.
Despite the sad conditions, I am still happy with Mistfits Market. The quantity is greater that I can get locally for $22 worth of organic produce, and I often feel that I should pay them for the variety that I receive without lifting a single neuron. As a lady who makes nearly all of the household dietary decisions, it is a huge relief to simply have someone else pick. I don’t mind making Chopped Challenge dinners for a few days - that is fun, and kind of impossible for the home cook like me to be surprised in the kitchen when I am also the grocery buyer. So Misfits Market is still a winner - even if my veggies arrive hot, I didn’t pick them and they were a deal. Bonus - tonight Mister Jupiter and I learned that Kid Jupiter loves cantaloupe, and he was happy eating all of my broccoli and fennel.
I’ll get to the show notes eventually! I promise that I only don’t have them up because I choose to spend time with my husband, and between husband and internet tasks - he always wins, and I will always choose him. Maybe I’ll just 86 the show notes…or only batch them every two months? Regardless, I have minimal time away from Baby and household tasks, so show notes will suffer and be late for at least five more years. This isn’t an excuse per se, just an explanation. Besides, I have a million other virtual tasks that are falling behind, so it’s not just the show notes - but those are all that you can easily see being tardy.

And that’s it for today’s show!
Show notes and transcript will be available eventually on LadyJupiter.com/podcast - scroll down to the link for Episode Seventeen: Mohawks & Going Gray.
