Episode № 101 Nobody Likes Tornadoes

Welcome back! Lady Jupiter Podcast is the audio accompaniment to LadyJupiter.com a lifestyle blog where I write about my family’s military life, our home life, and other tiny details that I just like to share. I’m happy that you’re here with me.

In this episode I’ll share an update on our life as affected by the U.S. military, then continue with a blog update, and wrap up with something domestic.

Today in our military-affected lives I have a significant update!

We finally got our orders!

Truly we got them last month, I wanted to tell our family members first before podcasting about it. So now that we finally got that one piece of paper, we have been able to do things like start talking to the movers, and get going on our government passports.

Originally I was going to tell you our whole plan, but things keep changing each week, so it’s impossible to tell you anything that we’re planning with any accuracy because of said changes.

So like usual, I will stick with telling you what has happened because those things are certain.

Since we last spoke I submitted my new passport application. Mister Jupiter & Kid Jupiter’s application appointments both needed to be rescheduled, due to one faulty printer, and one misplaced birth certificate. We were able to get mine in because I had my most recent passport handy…which I have been using in lieu of my own birth certificate because I can’t find it either…surely it’s in the same place as Kid Jupiter’s original birth certificate, so I ordered replacements already.

Fun fact about the passport photos taken that day - not only was I the only one of us to submit my application, but I was also the one wearing a bunch of make up to conceal a black eye. I would have liked to reschedule with my guys, but just wearing a lot of makeup is faster. One of three is better than zero, and the black eye wasn’t too obvious, and I don’t think any stitches were visible either. Obviously I’ll share more about that later -so rest assured that I am fine- but also rest assured that gravity is a constant, whether you land on your feet or your face.

Also, since last episode I have paid off my car and received the title. We already have a buyer lined up, so having the title in hand will make the sale easier. And since things are going to be very busy later this year, we’ve already decided that I will get some nice time all alone as I drive my car up to Illinois for the buyer, then fly back down to Arkansas.

It’ll be a nice drive because we’ll have already sold our house by then too, so I can just relax. We fully planned on selling our house the normal way; as in staging it for the realtors, listing publicly, then waiting for offers and such.

But a friend of a friend found out that we wanted to sell, and they essentially pounced on our property before we could go public. Works for us - especially because staging houses gives me more stress than I can manage. This almost-private sale is perfect for us because it’s a great house, we just don’t have the time do make it perfect before we go. And now we don’t have to.

For the record we did consider keeping it, and doing another 1031 exchange when we’re back in the country, but I just didn’t want to deal with it. We’re keeping our rentals, and we’ll just deal with the capital gains tax on this sale. Unfun, but manageable if we just set aside a chunk of the profit to donate to the IRS next year (who never gives us anything, but fine…I guess. I’d prefer if they just stayed out of personal home sales, but that’s just me).

Anyhoo, we’re already under contract and will close in a few months.

And we’re working on selling the Tesla. We have some interested parties, so that’s great. It’s just a matter of waiting to see which one is willing to commit to buy, AND maybe delay the sale for a minute? We’re not entirely ready to be a one-car family…our lifestyle depends on us having two cars.

The distances we adults need to be each week are far beyond bicycles, and we cannot rely on rideshare services from our home…maybe because of the distances we need. It’s hard to say, because I don’t know why Uber drivers refuse my fare…but I do know that we don’t have room for uncertainty, so we need two cars. But we need to sell them both. It’s very pleasant and comfortable.

For today’s LadyJupiter.com update...I posted the update about intermittent fasting for 40 months. And I think it’s fun; Mister Jupiter identified earlier this year that my hobby is collecting and organizing data. Then I add that my other hobby is sharing it. I’ll link to it and anything else relatively new in the show notes. Apologies for being hurried - I am seriously struggling to find time to record that doesn’t significantly disrupt everything else.

And lastly something domestic.

We had a tornado about a mile away from our house. That was a stressful day. Especially with a visiting family member. Luckily our closet is large and we all fit just fine. The storm was fast, so it was over pretty quickly too.

Mister Jupiter and I have only taken photos of downed trees in a public park. Despite my love of taking photos of everything, I didn’t take any of the local destruction because those were people’s homes, and taking photos of roofless apartments feels the same as taking photos of someone with their pants down. It’s unwanted vulnerability that doesn’t need photographed by us.

In the end the tornado was designated an EF3, the highest winds observed were 165 mph which is the very top end of EF3. One more mile per hour would bring it up to an EF4. Yikes.

I will talk to you when I can record next.
