Episode № 76 I’m Not Crying, You’re Crying!

Welcome back everybody!
Lady Jupiter Podcast is the audio accompaniment to LadyJupiter.com a lifestyle blog where I write about my family’s military life, our home life, and other tiny details that I just like to share. I’m happy that you’re here with me.

In this episode I’ll share an update on our life as affected by the U.S. military, then continue with a blog update, and wrap up with something domestic.

Today in our military-affected lives I have nothing significant to update.
Russia is still doing its thing…it’s just not headline news right now because the horrid combination of unsafe people and easily accessible firearms are taking center stage.

But since we last talked, I enjoyed two more Change of Command ceremonies. Kid Jupiter is getting really good at clapping with everybody, but still needs practice with anthems. I don’t expect him to place his right hand over his heart, but I need him to make peace holding my left hand instead of my right hand for a few minutes.

I didn’t get any audio from the first ceremony where our friend was incoming, but I did capture a little bit from the second ceremony where our friend was outgoing.

I really didn’t record more because I wanted to be respectful of our friend’s ceremony, but it was definitely bittersweet. Saying “see ya later” to a friend is always a little sad, but it’s super exciting because she’s off climbing some real mountains and influencing the next generation of leaders. We will definitely see her again, and we can’t wait.

For today’s LadyJupiter.com update…I published something new! Specifically Intermittent Fasting Month 30 that I mentioned last time.
📌 Intermittent Fasting, Month Thirty

I’ll link to it in the show notes at ladyjupiterpodcast.wordpress.com ! Gathering data and photos for that update was a little surprising to me -because It wasn’t until I was organizing the information- that I realized that I just resolved and documented a two-year long fat loss plateau. Typically people say “weight loss plateau” but I really don’t care about weight…also I have never owned a scale, so I never got attached to that metric.

Anyway. I’m pretty sure that I was literally stressing myself into insulin resistance, but I don’t have any cortisol data to support that hypothesis. I do however have data that my fasting glucose and my weight were slowly increasing. But more importantly, I share how I turned it around and started losing fat again. Yay!

I’m really looking forward to documenting my 40th month of intermittent fasting next year! I plan on getting a fresh metabolic panel drawn (so I can have more data points for fasting glucose, maybe another hemoglobin A1C also), and I have been playing with a second-hand Lumen. I’ll be writing about that device sometime this year when I have the time and literal bandwidth - we’re switching over to fiber and having internet problems this month (part of the reason this episode is delayed)! Regardless, Lumen is giving me some data, but it’s feeling like a real waste of money to me, so I’ll be writing about that on LadyJupiter.com as soon as I can.

And lastly something domestic.

I’ve been making my dogs chicken jello. It’s kind of gross, and kind of genius.

Atlas, our 14 year old has always needed more joint support, and since the pandemic started I’ve been having a hard time sourcing the glucosamine supplement that I know works for him. I’m amazed that it took me two years to make him some extra firm chicken jello at home - it’s definitely less processed and probably more bioavailable anyway.

I’m going to skip the written recipe for now, because I’m pressed for time - but here’s what I do, it’s simple.

I use what’s convenient. My last batch used a pound of raw chicken wings (drums and flats, with skin), and some fat trimmings from recent steaks. I pressure cooked them for an hour in eight cups of water. After cooking I removed the solids, stirred in a pinch of turmeric, then got my jars ready. I prefer wide-mouth quart jars, so I emptied two packets of gelatin into each jar. Then I ladle the plain, fresh broth into each jar, stir well to distribute the gelatin, then cover and refrigerate.

It sets best over night, and there will be a layer of fat on top. You can skim that if you want, but the dogs love it, so I leave it for them. The color should be a uniform yellow, and any gelatin clumps should have dissolved as it cooled. I give my good boys one or two tablespoons of chicken jello once or twice a day - definitely with their dinner, sometimes with their breakfast too.

They love it, and it’s an easy way to support their joint health. Later this year when we’re grilling more salmon - I’m going to freeze the skins for the next batch. Meanwhile I need to start visiting the nearest barbecue restaurant slash butcher to pick up smoked bones, and ask for stuff like chicken feet.

And that’s it for today’s episode.
