Episode № 72 Pre-PCS Downsizing

Welcome back everybody!
Lady Jupiter Podcast is the audio accompaniment to LadyJupiter.com a lifestyle blog where I write about my family’s military life, our home life, and other tiny details that I just like to share. I’m happy that you’re here with me.

In this episode I’ll share an update on our life as affected by the U.S. military, then continue with a blog update, then I’ll catch you up on the duck that adopted us; Darlene.

Today in our military-affected lives I have nothing significant to update.
We continue to watch Ukraine 🇺🇦

Very recently Mister Jupiter and I got to hang out around town for squadron related things. One evening we enjoyed a favorite brewery for dinner with someone new to the squadron. The next evening we had a traveling “nibble dinner” with someone very familiar with the squadron. We had appetizers and beverages in three different restaurants, and I got to impress my husband again with my apparent ability to keep ordering things that aren’t on the menu…but secretly available for purchase.

And just earlier I was texting with a friend about how we should know our next assignment by the end of this year, with plans to move next year. We’ll definitely tow a small trailer again - traveling with all of Kid Jupiter’s stuff is so convenient, we can’t go back. I am going to try to move with fewer plants this time, because they just don’t enjoy road trips. And as usual, I’m going to try to move with fewer clothes. I’m going to hazard a guess that our next closet won’t be as large as our current one, and that I’ll need to downsize anyway. If the closet is larger or the same size, I still need to downsize. I just really like having a lot of options, but realistically only need immediate access to a quarter of my clothes.

Besides my own closet, I need to start downsizing our pantry more, mostly for the same reasons. We have a great sized pantry that is full of spices, cans, cookbooks, and my collection of coffee tools. Luckily I am well acquainted with a local network of free pantries, so I can easily unload a lot of shelf-stable food to the community. The potential problem is the spices. It feels so wasteful to dump spices and move with empty glass jars, but if the spices are going to be sitting in a hot truck for a few days or weeks - I’ll want fresh ones anyway.

Similarly, I’ll need to make decisions about our refrigerated condiments too. Each time we pack up I feel the need to keep stuff, but when we get to our new home, I roll my eyes. Mustard isn’t rare. I can budget for new mustard at the new address. Maybe this next PCS will be the one where I don’t save the mustard? Or maybe I’ll get weird and consolidate all of the pickled olives and onions into one thermos and just play snack roulette en route to the new address?

Either way, we’re excited to move again. We definitely enjoy central Arkansas, but we really like experiencing new things.

For today’s LadyJupiter.com update…I still haven’t updated Outfits of the Day, and now I’m behind on my pizza & beer yearbook too.

It’s funny, medicating my ADHD has had the unexpected effect of making my computer surprisingly unappealing. I’m really good at sitting down, just not at my computer. Funny how that works. I’ll get back to updating soon (I’m sure).

And a check-in on Darlene, she’s doing great as far as we can tell.
Last week I interrupted two nosey crows who were super close to her. I was really divided because I wanted to make friends with them and give them some seeds, but I didn’t want to reward them for getting close to Darlene’s eggs. So, no seeds given. They hung out on the roof for a bit, then flew away and I haven’t seen them again. Darlene is still sitting on her children, and when I walk by, I still say “hey girl!”

And that’s it for today’s episode.
